I realize that there are many variables in play here (weather being the biggest!) but are there one or two airfields that Delta usually prefers to use as alternates for their heavies inbound to KATL?

Birmingham (KBHM), Columbia Metro (KCAE), Greenville/Spartanburg International (KGSP) and Charlotte Douglas (KCLT) are all viable depending on how widespread the bad weather is. All of those are big enough to handle heavies, even Columbia--with a UPS hub there, I've seen Big Brown fly MD-11s in during the December rush. I usually file KBHM because it's the closest.

KMGM gets alot of diversions from Delta and Air Tran. The runway is rated to handle almost anything, but normally the biggest we get is a 737. Flight Aware said an A340 came in a couple times last fall.
