Greetings Pilots-

A problem has risen. One that puzzles me, since my comp specs are so high (will detail later). Well, the issue is the classic Out of virtual memory error. Happens on each approach no matter the length of the flight. I disabled my ORBX, and only have add-on sceneries for my departure and arrival fields; nothing in between. I use the PMDG 747 with Active sky next. No other add-ons. Now, here's my specs:

Intel i7-4790K @ 4.00 GHz.
32.0 GB RAM
Windows 7 Professional
1100W power
Some gaming mother board
GTX 970 4GB

Well the question, of course, is why do I get these messages if I have nearly no add-ons, and a gaming computer.

Frustrated,

-Josh-

Honestly, with FSX a "gaming computer" won't help all that much with OOMs but rather performance in general. FSX has it's limitations and it doesn't matter what your hardware is, you'll keep running into this problem as you get closer and closer to that 4GB limit on your memory. This is one reason why I made the switch to Prepar3d a while ago. It does not have a 64 bit program yet but it's latest version has solved all OOMs for me. The newest version of Prepar3d "dumps" unwanted scenery behind freeing up memory for later in the flight. For example, I can start at EGLL with Aerosofts scenery and make a trip to KSFO with Flightbeam using ORBX scenery throughout. Once I leave the London area, the memory load from EGLL will dump off instead of remaining like previous versions and FSX. It's this lack of getting rid of unused scenery (and more advanced aircraft addons) that plagues most all OOM issues.

Avsim has a whole forum dedicated to OOMs that you can check out though. But it all honesty, if you make the switch to Prepar3d, you'll be happy (if not for the hit to the bank account)...

That's the problem, I don't want to re-purchase everything I have just so it'll work in P3D...

One of the biggest OOM contributors I had was my LOD_RADIUS being set to 6.5. When I backed it down to 4.5, my OOM's disappeared.

I guess my question is this: For those of you that switched from FSX to P3D, did you have the re-purchase all your add-ons? I know some are dual compatible, like ORBX, but PMDG isn't. did you need to re-buy PMDG or could you just work out a deal with them. Also, is the transition a difficult one, or is it quite simple to learn? thanks all.

Almost all my FSX add-ons worked in P3D. But... I did have to re-buy the PMDG 737 and 777 for P3D. It was painful, but it's the only way for me to escape FSX and not look back.

Yes. The academic version is the equivalent of FSX. There's a small watermark in the top right corner, but it never bothered me.
PMDG has a lot of threads in their forums explaining why legally they can't offer FSX port/pricing for P3D. I think it's a justified excuse for them to charge us more, but they pulled the plug on the debate quickly.

One thing I'd like to add. While P3D manages VAS better than FSX, it's still a 32 bit app and you will get OOM errors if you crank your settings up too high. I had to sacrifice a little detail (and FTX Vector) so I wouldn't get OOM errors with the PMDG 777. It's better than FSX, but not a miracle cure.

I can agree, p3d is the way to go. However, I did not see it mentioned here, make sure you have the HIGHMEMFIX=1 in you fsx.cfg That will fix most of your problems. But then so will p3d, for a price.

Have you tried applying the 4GB patch to it?
I mean, it's an out of memory error, and FSX is a 32-bit application (the last time I checked, anyway). Easy to see why it would throw an OOM at you.

http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

I used to get OOMs left and right on FS9 before I used this. Works wonders.
