I recently had to replace the hard drive on my computer. I now have a new hard drive with a new installation of Win8.1 64-bit. All well and good, computer is running much faster then ever. Of course I had to reinstall many things, one of them being FSX. When I run FSX, "missions" open and run just fine however when I try "Free Flight" or flight planning I immediately get the "Flight Simulator has stopped working" message and it closes. OK, in the past I had this issue and fixed it by checking the "enable Directx" box (settings/customize) which is not enabled by default. Here is where it gets complicated. My previous version of Win8 was running DirectX9. My new version of Win8 is running DirectX11. Now when go to settings/customize the check box to "enable DirectX is not there, gone! I have read several sources that say DirectX11 is not compatible with FSX. If this is the problem then how do I get around it? Can I, or should I install DirectX9 and if I do will I risk messing up an otherwise great running computer, something that I definitely do not want to do. Not sure which way to go here, any help will be much appreciated

Did you install the service packs for FSX? I believe that should make the DirectX enable option show up in the menu

I completely forgot about the SP1 and SP2 updates, I installed them, problem solved. Thank You very much ! I have not yet installed the Acceleration Expansion disc as it seems my son has not returned it to me after borrowing it about a year ago..........that may have prevented this problem from occurring in the first place. Thanks again.
