My computer only has 8 GB of RAM. I'm going to get it up to maybe 32GB in order to run XPlane a little better. How can I tell what type of RAM to get? There are so many kinds. I read somewhere that I have to go into the BIOS or something to see what speed my motherboard processes RAM, etc etc..

Can someone give me a little guidance?

Thanks.

do you have the box of the MB you have? or look into the pc and you see the name of the company and a REV # That way we can look up the Memory type and max support.

another option you can do is download CPU-Z and it will tell you that as well.

CPU-Z installed now. It says Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology, Model: Z77X-D3H, Chipset: Intel Ivy Bridge Rev 09, Southbridge: Intel Z77 Rev 04

Under BIOS
Brand: American Megatrends, Verson: F16

Under Graphic Interface
Version: PCI-Express
Link Width x16
Max Supported X16

Under Memory I see that I have DDR3 @ 8 GB

Here are your choices:

Up to 4 sticks of DDR3 2800(OC)/1600/1333/1066 MHz

I recommend this one...

I'm trying to go from 8GB to 16GB and saw 5 sticks for $30 on ebay. I have an old HP6200 Minitower business machine so 16GB will max me out. This is my "converted into a flight sim rig".

Probably won't make that much of a difference but going from an i5 to an i7 would cost $150 or more for only a small 10-15% gain in performance.
