Hey Guys, I am abut fed up with FSX and I am going to be switching to a different flight simulator. I have done some reading on them and I would really love some feedback from those of you using a different simulator.

I've looked into X-Plane, P3D and Steam.

I am looking for any kind of feedback, good, bad or indifferent because I want to get the biggest bang for my buck (Doesn't everybody, right?). Any and all inputs are welcome. The ability to add "Add-ons" is pretty important and/or importing aircraft I have already purchased.

Thanks much in advance

I'm a P3D guy, previously an FSX guy so I will share my transitional experience. The first benefit I received was stability. Another albeit more slight was directx 11 support with newer video cards. This is what really separates FSX and P3D.

FSX would crash (CTD) quite randomly for me. I'm a 'as real as it gets' simmer so I crank my sliders way right which is probably what killed FSX for me. With P3D I have nearly all sliders right, 4096 textures, max autogen, complexity, etc and it works well for me. I use all the same add-ons everyone has like REX, ASN/16, Orbx, PMDG, etc and they all work well, no VAS issues for me.

However the one drawback is that many of the legacy aircraft are not easy to install into P3D as the installer does not recognize P3D. Another major drawback is P3D is pretty costly by itself compared to the other platforms.

With that rig you shouldn't have any trouble running any of the flightsim platforms. I think the only trouble you could encounter is if you are running an ultra-wide screen res with multiple monitors. That might actually tax your GPU.

Seeing that you are in the 757 program, do you fly a 757 payware?

I certainly prefer P3D any day of the week over FSX. However, there have been some rumors that DTG is releasing their new full flightsim platform before the end of this year. Considering that's a matter of weeks it probably would be worth waiting to see what comes of it. If you're solely a 757 pilot there is a good 757 available on XP. When XP 11 is out I will be dipping my toe in that water.

It's the new sim that Dovetail Games (DTG) plans to release soon as Joel mentioned above. DTG are the ones who brought FSX to the Steam platform. According to Dovetail, the new sim they will release at the end of this year will be quite different from the original FSX platform. We'll see razz

You're welcome, bud. And I'm in the same boat as you. I am going to hold off for a bit and read some reviews of these new sims once they are released before I take the plunge. However, I am pretty much prepared (no pun intended razz) to jump on X-Plane 11 once it's released.

I run both XP10 and P3D, had big problems with P3D initially, so completely re-built my system last week and have tried P3D again and it runs really nicely.

XP 10 is 64 Bit and will eat whatever system you have, the more you have, the more it will eat, but it's a great sim, very busy user community with more free stuff available than probably payware, some of the free stuff is frankly as good as some payware.

My Ststem Specs
I7 6700K o/c 4.5GHZ, liquid cooled
32GB DDR4 3000MHz Corsair RAM
Gigabyte Z170 Mobo
Samsung Evo 250GB for XP and FSX now P3D)
Samsung 240GB for OS
Win 10 Home 64 bit
Case Phanteks Enthoo Pro M

Both sims run well, XP does take some time to get the settings correct, not in to Beta versions so will wait for V11 to be released, wait for early reviews on it before taking the plinge, P3D still playing with settings to get the best of it, but happy with the current results on a 32" LG TV at 1920x1080.

If you consider XP seriously, would strongly recommend a system that has an Nividia GPU as they just run better with opengl, I would say absolute min is 16GB, 32GB is very much more desirable though by the time you add some HD mesh, payware scenery / planes etc, the more the better.

My FSX became unusable because Microsoft stopped all tech support for it. Just yesterday I got FSX Steam edition. It's just like the FSX we all know and love with a few extra aircraft and additional missions I'm trying to install the Squawkbox on it but I keep getting a message that it isn't supported. As long as all the add ons you want are recent everything should work out. If you buy before Jan 2nd 2016 it's only $10.00. Good luck! smile

FSX has become unstable for me too on Win 7 so it feels like FSX Steam would be the next progression. X-Plane dogged my PC really bad so I had to uninstall it. Any other pointers of FSX Steam vs more expensive P3D? Thanks

I have just moved to P3D and love it so far. I've copied most of my fsx sceneries across and most of them work even though not listed as P3D. My only gripe is with PMDG since they have set their installer to recognise P3D and if it's a FSX installer it won't install. Aerosoft have the P3D working without the need for a key so that's what I'm using.

I made the move to P3D and happy so far. Still reinstalling several add-ons and have moved all on-line flying to Pilots Edge (PE) and all works well together so far, running AS2016, ASCA, GEHD, PE, EFB and FS2Crew of course . .. (PE expensive but worth it for full ATC service from Clr Del to shutdown . . these guys are pros)
