Anybody who has this, did you notice a hit on performance with frame rate? I'm doing 4.1ghz and have an AMD Radeon 7850 gpu with 2gb, and plenty of regular RAM

I personally did not notice a performance hit. Now, that doesn't mean there wasn't one, it just wasn't really noticeable.

Hey Luke, thanks for your response. It's the Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W BX80637I53570K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000

And my GPU is MSI, not AMD...lol

I have definitely noticed a performance hit, especially when there is a lot of weather to generate (ie. clouds, rain, etc.). Low visibility conditions are particularly rough. I also use the Cloud Art extension so that probably doesn't help.

Thankfully, there are a few options you can adjust to mitigate the performance impact. Carefully examine the provided descriptions of the different settings to see which ones mention performance trade-offs. Of the top of my head I think "suppress local weather changes" was a big one for performance. Makes the weather change a little less frequently but I haven't noticed much of a drawback beyond that. You can also "prevent downloads on approach" to avoid having AS16 try to load new weather when you're nearing the airport.

Hope that helps!

Also, don't use max resolution on the clouds. That will definitely bring your system to its knees in cloudy weather.

Noah and Greg, thanks for the responses. I've always heard that it was a great weather program, I just never pulled the trigger. I'm considering switching to p3d at some point, but really don't want to lose all of the add-ons I have, not to mention basically needing to build a new computer if I want to do it right. I keep getting into occasional fist fights with FSX, may just stay where I am for now...not sure.

If so, I'd like to improve the weather

Any performance hit will not be due to the program per say but per the weather the sim has to render.

There are things you can do there. Default it limits cloud layers to 5 and limits thunderstorms to 1 giant layer. I have turned both these off and don't notice any difference. I've seen cbs well into 45000+ level now. pretty awesome.

Been using AS since the fs9 days.

ASN (the previous version) user here, FSX as well and an i5-3570K (but running at 4.2GHz -- utilise that "K" suffix, Josh!). Did you also get ASCA or are you using another texture package (REX4 for example)? In any case, as long as you don't select the high textures options in any of your texture progs you will be good to go. I have my REX4 clouds textures set to 512 (DXT5) and they still look great.

It's a whole new world out there with ActiveSky cool

Under REX4 optimal is

High level clouds 1024

Low level cloud 2048

Runways/taxiways 1024

literally no effect on vas but you wont notice the typical artifacts with 512 textures stretched 4x their native size on your screen
