Well, it's doing it again. My good 'ol all-time arch-nemesis FSX suddenly doesn't want to load on startup. I get the "Microsoft Flight Simulater X" box, then "A Fatal Error Has Occured." As I've said in the past...this happens from time to time, and in a day or two, it will probably load just fine like there was never an issue, and that's what I don't understand. Yesterday morning I installed a VHHH scenery freeware, and for being free I thought it looked great. The sim worked fine when flying into Kai Tak to test it out. Since that's the only thing really different, I moved the VHHH folder back out of the Addon Scenery folder, but that hasn't solved anything. It just tells me when I first open FSX that the scenery is missing, then attempts to load as usual.

But I'm afraid it may be getting to that point for me to "attempt" to find the time to do a full wipe and reinstall. I absolutely dread the thought of having to start over and try to get it back to running like it has been :-/ I've read before that you don't necessarily have to delete every single little thing that you've installed, that you can move it to a temp folder and slide it back over. So my question is:

What kinds of programs (add-ons), configuration settings, etc. are safe to do that with? I guess my concern is doing a reinstall, sliding this or that back over into the FSX directory, and then it just starting to act up yet again. I know that process will be meticulous, where I'll have to do one thing at a time and test it out if I really want to narrow down an issue. That's part of my problem when it comes to time. Some of the programs I have installed are:

Traffic:

- Ultimate Traffic 2

Scenery/Terrain:

- Ultimate Terrain X
- MegaScenery (GA, SC, KPIT)
- ImagineSim KATL,
- Fly Tampa (TNCM)
- TheAirportGuys (KMYR)
- A few freeware sceneries from AvSim for newer airports that weren't yet built when FSX was launchedmissing from FSX

Weather:

- ActiveSky16
- Activesky Cloud Art
- OPUS FSX (since ActiveSky I haven't been using this)

Aircraft:

- PMDG 737 & 777
- Level-D 767 (I own this but not sure if I have it installed currently)
- A2A Cessna 172 Accu-Sim Trainer
- A few freeware planes from either AvSim or DVA

Misc:

- FSUIPC (free version)
- RAAS Pro

I believe I found everything that I have. I'd appreciate any help you can offer that would help expedite this dreaded process!

On average, I will wipe my hard drive every 2 years with a clean install. Some people I know will make an image of their machine once everything is installed and working. I don't since it would take to long to run updates on all of the out of date software. It takes me a full weekend to reinstall everything but with a clean OS/Games my pc runs better and I get better frames in FSX. It worth doing the work.
