Careful, Jay. The KEYW's runway is too short for the 717.

Runway 9/27 is 4,800 ft. The 717 requires 4,650 ft for landing and 5,500 ft for takeoff, so I hope you didn't book a round trip ticket. Also, I doubt operations appreciates us stranding aircraft haha.

Now that I think about it, our fleet profiles page indicates that the E170 isn't acceptable for the flight either due to takeoff performance. Our E170 profile states that 5,299 ft is required for takeoff. Andrew, I know that DL is actually operating this flight with the E170, but our fleet profiles page doesn't take into account weight-limited flights like this one. So what does this mean for us at DVA since "insufficient runway length for takeoff" is grounds for PIREP rejection, and the listed aircraft for that flight in our schedule isn't capable of meeting DVA's determination of those performance requirements?

Good info Nathan. You have done your homework. I will make a change to the E170 profile.

Thanks, Andrew!

I've looked into the E170 performance some more.

This figure is from the E170 Airport Planning Manual published by Embraer.

On an ISA+15 day, takeoff weight is limited to about 72,500 lbs at EYW.

Some quick fuel calcs for an LGA-EYW route:
Distance: 1061 NM (great circle)
Cruise TAS: 460 knots
Air time: 2.28 hours
Cruise fuel flow (from DVA aircraft profile): 2050 lbs/hr per engine

Thus, fuel required for the flight with BOS as the alternate comes to:
Trip: 9,368 lbs
Alternate: 2,225 lbs
Reserve: 3,075 lbs
Minimum takeoff fuel: 14,698 lbs

Now, to examine the weight limitations to find the maximum payload weight.

Takeoff Weight Limitation: 72,500 lbs
Basic Operating Weight: 45,636 lbs (does not include crew)
Crew weight (inc. bags): 900 lbs (two flight crew members and two flight attendants)
Minimum takeoff fuel: 14,698 lbs

Subtracting the basic operating weight and the minimum takeoff fuel from our takeoff weight gives us the maximum payload weight of 11,266 lbs.

FAA AC 120-27E establishes the average passenger weights that airlines are to use for weight and balance calculation. This flight is a summer seasonal flight, so we'll use the summer standard average passenger weight of 190 lbs.

If there are no checked bags onboard, the maximum number of passengers able to be carried on the flight is only 59. This illustrates why Delta already imposes a limit of one checked bag per passenger on flights to and from EYW (note that is a hard limit - you cannot pay a fee to check more than one bag). Checked bags will only further reduce the maximum allowable passenger load.

That great graph shows why its difficult to attach a single number to runway length requirements. I did shrink the requirement in our aircraft data to be less than the KEYW runways. smile

Great post, Nathan! Really demonstrates the problem of operating out of a marginal field. It's still hard to believe that Eastern would put 727-100s in there. When I was stationed at the NAS in the late 80s, Piedmont would fly F28s in there, but they were load limited and the runway had to be dry. So the schedule, like Delta's, was in and out before the afternoon showers. Delta marketing reportedly wanted to put a 737-700 in there at night. Fortunately, FLTOPS said "NO WAY!".

Better get your landing skills very sharp! There isn't much margin for error when landing at KEYW.... Got F5s stationed just North East of the airport and there are water everywhere!

But the F-5s don't carry real bullets. (Although the Hornets do.) Careful out there!

Keep forgetting the Key West NAS has the Hornets along with the P3, P8 and E2s. Been some time since Dan W and I flew down there haha
