I could use a little advice. I've been out of the simulator life for a few months and as I'm getting back involved I'm seriously considering a rebuild of my computer which is at least 10 years old. I don't think I'm going to switch to XPlane 11 since I really don't fly that much to justify spending the money on a new platform and additional software for planes and scenery. But since more and more of us are using XPlane, if its really that much of an improvement I might head that way. But for now P3Dv4.5 seems to do ok. Any suggestions on a new processor and video card to update my system. Do I need an entirely new motherboard, memory etc, or would a new processor and video card do the trick? I know what I have would not even run XPlane 11 like I want either. I downloaded the free example and it's not quite there. I want to run with sliders at 100.

Currently I have an Intel i-5-3570 CPU @ 3.4Ghz and I believe it's overclocked to close to 4.0 with liquid cooling. My video card is an Nvidia GForce GTX 1070.

What would y'all do to amp this thing up?

Rebuilding a computer every couple of years isn't a bad idea as it gets cluttered up with bloat and generally bad DNA. With all of the effort that goes into a rebuild, it's a good time to buy or build a new computer too. In your case, a 10 year old computer, I would think it's time unless you're perfectly happy with it and feel it has a few more years left in it.

It's the age old question - how much money do you want to stick into a 10 year old computer vs. how much more time does that buy you and optimally can the new parts be used on a future new rig?

Motherboards and processors go hand in hand in terms of socket type and what processors the MB will support. The motherboard also dictates what type of memory and memory capacity is supported. The sure answer here is video card as they are an easy swap out and replacement, they generally add frame rate improvement, and they're going to be reusable on a future computer. If you were on FSX I'd say forget about the video card as it will buy you next to nothing in terms of performance. P3D is a different story and I think you'd get some mileage out of a video card upgrade.

If you want to run sliders at 100% on a 10 year old computer, personally I'd be throwing in the towel for new CPU/MB/RAM and just like that you're at a new rig.

I'd recommend giving the XP11 demo a try to see how smooth it runs. Turn up sliders to see how it stresses your system. Open task manager and see what's the bottleneck.
