Now that Delta?s December timetable is out, has anyone else noticed that Delta has cut the number of 757 destinations out of Atlanta? After a quick glance through it, I noticed a few familiar 757 routes were no longer being served by that equipment: ATL-ORD, ATL-CVG, ATL-PHL, ATL-IAD, ATL-DCA to name a few.

However, on the plus side, we have added the seasonal ski destinations of GUC and JAC. I was wondering if this was a seasonal capacity issue, or if these routes are gone for good for the 75?

From their press announcement as to why Boeing was halting production of 757, I suspect that the 737NG series aircraft is taking the places of the 757 in Delta's schedule. Boeing said that they were going to concentrate on production of the 737 family because of the increased passenger loading they were attaining with that family. An assumption on my part is that the 737 is cheaper to build than the 757, hence cost per passenger seat in production is lower.

Delta currently 77 B752 and has leased other 44 (which make a total of 121). The NGs take over will not take place long time from now, since there are 61 orders (11 of those orders, as soon as they arrive to ATL will be sold to other airlines or carriers in order to cut down the big financial problems bugging Delta). It will take a long time to get rid of the 757 in the Delta fleet since Song is not being as profitable as they said it should be doing.

http://www.delta.com/inside/investors/corp_info/fleet/index.jsp <- The fleet can be checked here.

In addition to this, Delta cannot afford replacing big airliners with MANY little ones, so the thing would be leaving things as they are now, or bringing in Song's 757s to DAL and giving them the brand new NGs since, their costs are lower and they carry almost the same amount of PAX (and they may be used in cross country routes).

Cheers!

I think you touched on it Gaston, but I got to thinking that there's a good possibility that some of the B752 lease obligations may be coming due at the end of the year, so they're phasing those aircraft out of the fleet. Someone with more familiarity of airline operations than I would probably know better.

It's a real shame that Boeing has halted production on the 757 family because from what I hear it's a very economical airframe, not to mention nice looking and an excellent performer. But, by the looks of Delta's orders and options, the 737-8 will be the workhorse of the future... better get started on that rating! wink
