Hello My friends, I hope all of you are ok!

I am in a process of changing my desktop PC, and the driver will be the best hardware config to fly with MSFS 2020.

What are your thoughts about this? What is the best HW config. Are the 3080 or 3090 graphic cards really necessary?

Thanks

Best Regardas and Keep Safe!

The best answer to that question is to try it with what you have now, and see if it's acceptable. It runs OK on my 1070, probably better than P3D. What is your current video card, and screen resolution?

Cheers!

I have it running just shy of 30 fps on an RX 5700 XT with minimal issues. I fly with live weather but AI Traffic turned off.

I'm sure a 3080-90 would be prime for running it, but it may be a moot point currently as 30XX series GPU's are virtually extinct everywhere due to a global supply shortage coupled with bots sucking up any available for cryptocurrency mining

Well, My PC pc has 11 years old. It is top class fot those years, but know It cannot handle MSFS. It has an Intel I7 (10 years old...), overclocked to 2.65Hz, a GForce GTX 260 Gcard, 6Gb RAM... Yeap...Oldy!!!

I know that those 3080 are in stress worldwide, and it mekes me go "grrrr"... It is just Graphic cards!!! That bitcoin mining is really making a mess of it. What about the alternatives?

Given the age of that mainboard, you're looking at a complete rebuild. If it takes 6GB of RAM it's likely a pre-Sandy Bridge i7 which means that it predates the biggest jump in computing power (my middle daughter still has the i5-2500K I gave her a few years back. It's over 11 years old and runs all her games just fine - amazing!)

Your best bet is to start planning for a complete overhaul; modern mobo, 16GB of RAM (at least!), SSDs (M2 for the size factor, NVMe is better) and a modern video card with at least 10GB of VRAM. It's not going to be cheap, and worse it's not going to be fast but you got a good run out of your existing hardware.

Cheers!

Here's my setup I JUST got

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700KF CPU @ 3.80GHz (16 CPUs), ~3.8GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce RTX 3080
Current Mode: 3440 x 1440 (32 bit) (180Hz)

Running on a Predator x35 Ultrawide Monitor I get 30-35fps in the cockpit of the FlybyWire A320 and about 45-50fps from behind the plane. All settings on Ultra. There are some things I could probably turn down to High to increase fps a little more but it still runs smooth. It's an upgrade from the 2070 Super I had before, but not by as much as I thought it would be.

So in other words..if you can find a 2070 or 2080, grab it. But I do remember I was CPU bottlenecked before. Now the CPU runs at about 25-40% during flights instead of almost constantly at 100 with the previous machine I was on.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I would really wanted a 3080, but It is going to be very very difficult to get one, due to the world shortage... I think I´ll grab that 2070/2080 tip! And maybe a i9.

I just have to investigate those Portugal prices and make a decision to start using MSFS!!

Best Regards!
Luis

I basically just bought a new machine with a 3080 already in it just so I can have it. Paid less than what I would have paid to get the 3080 by itself! I gave the excuse that my stepson was moving out so I gave him the machine with the 2070 in it!

I haven’t been keeping up with the 3080 issue simply for the fact that I’m not in a position to buy one just yet but I did face a very similar supply issue with the PS5 back in November. I was able to snag one after a little over a month with moderate effort thanks to a few Discord’s and Twitter accounts that notified me when they were in stock. I recall seeing similar options for the GPU’s.

Check into NZXT BLD. I got mine on Black Friday and with the discount, paid MSRP for the 3080. I'm getting a solid 30 FPS, but more importantly, smooth graphics with only the occasional lag for loading new areas. I'm very happy, but YMMV.

I got mine from Cyber Power PC back in October, I custom built mine from the ground up. It did take about 45 days to get it, but it was a great build after. Use the Discount code CPFB5 and you get 5% off.

I have seen so many videos about this subject. It is just incredible!! Some say that a part of the problem can be with thw GPU industry, that are not doing everything they can to prevent the massive buying by criptominers. I didn't manage to buy a new PC yet... :(((
Crossing my fingers to that GPU market release...

I will say, that I managed to snag a 3090 awhile back and FS2020 is definitely CPU bottle-necked still in most cases. I have an 8700K @ 4.8GHz and a lot of the time the 3090 is at 40-50% utilization and when I go in dev mode it shows main thread as the limiting reagent. So it is safe to say you do not need bleeding edge GPU for FS2020 but a high end, high clock speed CPU will be useful.

Hello Adam,

Thanks for you r feedback. So it is true what a lot of people are saying, that powered CPU is mandatory to a good MFS2020 experience... I stiil trying to catch a good PC config at the stores... It is not easy nowadays (still not... :(...)

Yeah these are rough times to be in the market for computer hardware for sure.

I did a little more experimenting and its definitely CPU limited still. While it makes use of multiple cores much better than FSX and P3d the limiting factor is that it still relies heavily on one core for the main process. The 3090 varies between 30-60% load depending on the location and flight conditions. My overall CPU usage hangs out around 40% total most of the time. But, when you look at the load on each of the 6 individual cores one will almost always be sitting at 100% and this is the core with the main process, the others will only be partially utilized. People would really get a lot more bang for their buck if the main thread activity was spread between 2 or 3 cores. So, unfortunately, its still very much dependent on single core, high clockspeed performance.

So, do you think that i7 or i9 are mandatory? Do the Ryzen 7 or 9 families manage to have power to this flight sim?

I couldn't speculate as to the Ryzen performance as I have never used an AMD processor in the last 25+ years so I really have no point of reference. In the current state, I am not sure the difference between i7 and i9 would be significant as one core still is the limiting factor. One could argue that clockspeed is more important in this case. Theoretically, if you took an i7 and i9 of the same generation and the i7 was overclocked to 5.0 and the i9 was stock at 3.8-4.0, the i7 might win just on the virtue of per core clockspeed. On the other hand, i9 would crush the i7 if the main FS2020 process was distributed evenly across the cores which thus far it is not.

Welll... It seems that those issues that we, flight simmers, experience for several versions, still make our heads hurt... The processor dependency...

As I mentioned previously, I've had no problems running FS2020 with a Ryzen 7 3700X CPU and RX 5700XT GPU. Currently flying the Aerosoft CRJ at 30+ fps on an ultra-wide (3440 x 1440) monitor. I don't use AI or RW traffic (which I've heard can hit frames).
