What video cards are being used for XP11 and XP12 with great success? In the process of building out a new system and want to ensure I have enough GPU power without over spending.

I was using an 8GB 1070ti for a long while for XP11. Last year I finally opened my wallet and spent more than $200 on a video card and got a 3080 because I got a good deal somewhere on ebay I think. Its 12GB and I can run XP12 pretty well. I have no issues with XP11 but I run both on 1080 and NOT full settings. Remember you have a system so all the parts work together (CPU, ram, SSD, GPU, etc.).

My specs that I'm very happy with:

Asus Z690M LGA Intel mobo
Intel Core i7 12700ZKF 3.7 Ghz
32GB DDR4 2400 Ram
MSI 3080 LHR 10GB GPU

This is my primary hobby so I have bought bits and pieces over the years. I think the big upgrade last year was in the $900 range not including a new power supply that I wasn't anticipating. I also still focused on single thread strength and speed since I still play a lot of 32-bit games and XP11 is 32-bit I believe. I also play DCS. My fans have been running more on the GPU but it may be a driver issue. Only Ready Or Not typically got the fans running in the past.

I run 1080p on an LG widescreen with a 1024 19" "square" monitor for charts, ACARS, etc. I also sometimes run a 3rd screen propwash sims G530 but only if I'm flying GA.

XP11 runs just fine at 40-50 fps and pretty smooth and pretty. XP12 runs fine so far but just getting into it.

According to what I read on the X-Plane Org Forum, XP12 is more CPU-dependent. Most systems have their bottleneck on the CPU side. For example, I am running on a Core i7 12700H with an RTX3060 6Gb VRAM, and my system bottleneck is the CPU. Even people with much better CPUs get the same frame times higher than the GPU that they have. However, a better GPU will get you more VRAM, and as of now, XP12 is extremely hungry. Of course, they are still tuning it, and maybe it will improve over time, but as of now, VRAM is a big plus.

I am also pursuing a better system, not only for XP12 but also for MSFS. With that in mind, I believe having a system with a Ryzen with X3D architecture, like the older Ryzen 7 5800X3D, will help somewhat for XP12 and will be a game-changer in MSFS. As for the GPU, I am looking for an RTX 4070Ti, 12Gb VRAM, which will double my current setup and greatly improve the overall look of XP12. Also, DLSS is here to stay, even if LR doesn't seem to be steering in its direction, but for MSFS, you will get a huge improvement.

Also, having 32GB of RAM CL14 and a nice SSD NVME, using any good cost-benefit motherboard, you will most likely have a setup that will serve you very well on both XP12 and MSFS for a good time.

Here is a thread on the XP forum about frame testing CPU/GPU. There, you can see that Ryzen 5800X3D processors get some very nice results for X-Plane. Also, you need to consider whether you will use Windows or Linux. Linux seems to be better for running X-Plane.

https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/71725-x-plane-benchmark-charts-fps-tests/

That's the link to the spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15rNa7_naUM8a4YzzrzwrxvWSl4X8SHesshZGm7H54AI/pubhtml

This other forum is about a user who makes some tests pairing different CPUs with different GPUs. You will see that XP12 still relies more on the processor than the graphics card.

https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/279028-xp12-some-tests-with-5800x-vs-5800x3d-in-4k-with-three-different-gpus-rx-6600-rtx-3070-rtx-4080/

I would advise you to set aside some time to read that forum extensively. Many issues I was having in XP12, I found out how to solve them there.

Best regards,

Bruno.

Thank you for all the great feedback. I'll check out the test results, and I am glad I asked since I thought it would be more dependent on GPU.

Al the cards are fairly close to where you or I won't really notice the difference.
I'm about to use my new 7900XT. I'm AMD all the way.
