I determined that my dsl router/modem does not have the port addressing features needed for AVC. It goes to sleep after periods of none use. I am looking for a LINKSYS Router/Switch BEFSR41 or a similar equivalent model or brand.

If you have a working one that you would like to dispose of, drop me an email.

It will be wonderful to be able to fly online and know that I can depend upon voice communications.

Terry,

Question - Does your DSL modem/router have more than one port. My 2Wire for SBC does. I would be able to connect my switch and a PC to the DSL modem/router.

Just a thought.

My ZyXEL DSL modem/router has one CAT5 port. I currently run it to a hub that permits 4 additional LAN connections.

The plan is to use the ZyXEL as DSL modem only, in what is known as bridge mode. Connect to it a router/switch using CAT5. The Linksys model that I am looking at has 4 CAT5 ports plus the uplink CAT5 to the modem. The Linksys manages the LAN and PPPOE for connection to my ISP.

Many users are upgrading from wired to wireless routers. Thought someone might have one that they no longer need and would like to dispose of it.

Terry--is this the problem where your AVC works for about 5-10 minutes and then just quits, no sound? That's the problem I'm having and I have a Netgear RT314 4-port router, I'm going to try fiddling with port settings, maybe it needs that port 3872 opened that's mentioned in the docs. The thing's a pain to set up so it'll take a while...so I'm uninstalling AVC and using RW for the fly-in today.

Lewis,

The Netgear is like the ZyXEL from my research. It goes "to sleep" after 3 mins. of none use. Clicking the mic button wakes it up but it is very annoying.

An upgrade to the firmware will not correct the problem in my case. The solution is to purchase a new router/switch. The LinkSys BDFSR41 is a wired switch that works.

If you want to know the technical explanation as to why AVC goes to sleep. Let me know and I'll make an attempt to explain. At this point I know more than I ever wanted to know about UDP communication protocol.

Terry,

Get a Linksys or Netgear. One suggestion don't get D-Link.

Thanks for confirming that the LinkSys works. Going to CompUSA today to buy one.

AVC developers indicate that the Netgear is like the ZyXEL, so I'll not be considering it.

Doh! Well, I can't replace the router, so I sure hope the AVC developers come up with a workaround or I may end up being text only if RW is no longer supported.

Lewis,

I was informed rather bluntly that AVC had no intentions to resolve the problem short-term. The good news is that with the conversion from wired to wireless networking there is a flood of Linksys routers on Ebay where you can purchase for $30 or less.

RW has the same problem as AVC; however, RW is designed to ping the server frequently to keep the ports open and committed.

The alternatives are not good if you need to connect via a NAT router that uses PAT.
