I am in the process of updating our Fleet Installers to use DXT3 textures. These can offer a signifcant size and memory savings, and when combined with some new compression technology from the NSIS folks is allowing me to get some dramatic size reductions in the installers. Our 767 installer, as an extreme case, was shrunk by approximately 14MB.
Those of you with 16MB and 32MB video cards should see the most significant performance boost, since smaller textures mean less swapping out to slow main memory; all of you with anything less than David Schaum's monster GPU should see some benefit since most video cards can natively handle DXT textures (DirectX textures) using hardware acceleration.
The first aircraft to be converted are the 727, 757, 767, 777, MD-88 and MD-90. They are no longer available in the Fleet Library, but should be up by Thanksgiving.
