Dear All,
I have been having a great time at DVA so far and have recently completed ten flight legs, opening the opportunity for me to become a captain here. I studied carefully the AIM/FAR and the 757 manual for a few days and then took the test yesterday. I did pass with a score of 16/19, but one of the questions that I specifically remember studying in the Airman's Information Manual got marked wrong. It was a question about what part of the sky is covered by clouds when a metar states "FEW". In AIM section 7-1-29 item 9 it clearly states that 0-2/8 of the sky is covered if the metar reports "FEW". That was my answer, but it got marked incorrect. I would appreciate it if you all looked into this to make sure that no one else gets it marked wrong, but it is unnecessary to rescore my test. Thanks in advance!

The test is actually wrong. The AIM material is correct. I missed that question on my Captain's test too, but it was explained to me that the testing material needs to be updated.

Several things regarding the test:

When might we expect those updates to be completed? I am in no hurry but I would like to know. If a date cannot be estimated I understand. In that case it would be nice at least to see a notice when it does actually occur.

I have a feeling the same situation as above is true for my most recent test, however I have no way of knowing if the correct answers come from accurate information. On my entrance exam and on a 737 additional rating test I did recently the correct answers were displayed on the graded test. This one didn't have the answers listed. I would like to be able to compare my answers with the right ones and the right ones with the materials I used to prepare for the test.

I haven't been able to find out what score is required to pass. When I read the email telling me my test had been graded I had every impression that I had passed (although it was never expressly stated, one way or the other). According to the website though, I did not.

Unrelated: Has the server been going down sometimes over the last few days, or is it just me?

The way things go around here sometimes, it's hard to say.

Don't worry, some one will post a sticky when it's done.

Everything came straight from the aircraft manuals and AIM. Sometimes typos occur when transposing page after page of information.

We made that change about a year and a half ago because some people were using their failed tests to cheat. When there are only 50 questions, you can exhaust the pool in 2 or 3 retests.

If you use our flight encyclopedia and manuals there shouldn't be any discrepencies, but as I said, typos happen.

Sander, I just looked what it says in the Flight Simulation Encyclopedia beside "FEW" it says 1-2/8 not 0-2/8 as you stated so actually it is right unless you have an old edition or misread it.

Thanks for all the responses. I am sure, though, that my AIM/FAR book is the latest edition and that FEW definitely means 0-2/8 of coverage. It must have been a typo. Matt-could you let the other chief pilots or whoever grades the tests of this problem and make a temporary amendment so that nobody else gets it wrong?

The FAA.gov web site AIM table 7-1-23 describes few as FEW>0/8-2/8.

Hmm, Sander, I usually look through the publications DVA has first then if I can't find the answer I look elsewhere. There is bound to be errors somewhere with questions and answers and it isn't an exact science. Usually when you look outside of DVA's published materials you are bound to find other answers but at times you have to.
