It was really fun to see a lot of you out tonight for the group flight from Houston to Dayton. It was even more pleasurable to have two DVA pilots handling my approach and tower positions.

What wasn't fun was the DC-8-61 tonight. I fired it up figuring I could fly it just as well as any other aircraft. I was wrong. I couldn't get the autopilot to work in a single axis, and ended up stalling the aircraft at 9'000 feet because of an uncommanded (well, not intentionally uncommanded) pitchup. I managed to recover at 900' AGL, only to have numerous A/P problems and fuel flows that ensured I had consumed 55% of my fuel load before 25000'.

My criteria for a groupflight checkride is "pilot is able to competently handle the aircraft in question." I clearly failed that test tonight. Back to the 732 for me.

Cheers!

Luke

So that's why you didn't join me in flying the CV-880 the night I checked out in it. I guess it's only for us special people. smile
