I anticipate some downtime within the next week or so. I have recently purchased some extra memory for our old, tired server to upgrade it from 256MB to 512MB. This will involve downtime of approximately 30-60 minutes.

The moemory needed is just to direct the requests when made at the same time..
For sure if you have "lots" of requests to direct - at the SAME time - then you'll need more memory.
This could be our case. Lots of us requesting server attention at the same time.
I'd say that we won't notice the difference after the change. This change, I believe is to prevent slowdown in the future. (I hope near future - would means that we have lots more people)

Tony's correct. Our biggest limitation is in most cases bandwidth, but as the site has increased in size, the tables get larger, take longer to index, etc. etc. What was originally a 20MB web site is now over half a gig, and the indexes take longer to rebuild and update.

Upgrading the box from an IDE drive to wide SCSI made a significant difference, and the RAM upgrade will help a bit, but it's not going to be dramatic. Then again, at $38 the price is right. smile
