A brief question for those of you who use our Fleet Library for your aircraft, panels and sounds. How concerned would you be if the sizes of our sound schemes increased significantly, from 2-7MB to around 20MB?

The reason I ask is two-fold. Up until know, I've been using a set of ten year old speakers since I've never been too particular about my audio and my hearing is pretty abysmal anyways. However, I recently picked up an Altec Lansing 2.1 system and have noticed just how crappy our sounds are. I'm considering evaluating some larger sound sets to see how they work and sound.

Remember that sounds are NOT packaged with the installers, so this would be an optional download.

Cheers!

The new sounds you propose would add immensely to the simming experience, but for those of us with archaic dial-up connections a 20mb download would take over an hour. All in all - I'm up for it! I have to wait a long time anyway for most of the fleet installer's. Unfortunately there are no plans for a broadband connections in my little corner of the backwoods, I think it is time to move towards the city (the sacrifices we make for flight-simming) I hope my wife understands.....

Hey Luke! What's yer phone number? Maybe you can explain it to her better than I :-D

Luke I'd go for it because I have DSL. I understand those that are on dialup would take much longer. Is it possible to have a choice for both?

I still say it was a good thought for the day. smile That said, I think some higher end sounds would be great. I downloaded a 50MB CFM package for the 767 tonight and it shakes my desk with the base cranked. smile

Luke:

I would be all for the new sounds. I do think that it would be nice to have an option on which sound set to download for those with slower connections.

Will quality sounds slow the frame rates?

I'll take up on James' question, would they take up more CPU and eat your frame rates? Anyway, that should be a matter of time till I get my new stick of RAM.

So I guess, all in all, I'm up for it!

Cheers!

As long as you a running a sound card or on-board sound with a DSP chip, you should not see any real difference in the frame rates. The only way there would be a frame rate hit would be if the on-board sound used processor cycles to process the wavs.

You will definately see a decrease in performance using on-board sound and the sound quality cranked up in FS. Would be wise to invest in a decent sound card.
