There is confusion with the word bankrupt. In the private sector it is seen as a last resort and means the individual is dead in the water. On a large corporate scale it is similar is some ways, but different in the ways we are talking about. With a larger company, like Delta, by filing for bankruptcy, this gives them many governmental protective rights. This also saves them money from debt they may have. The plan is to come out on top with a strong, rubust system which is able to carry the cost load that got them there in the first place. 2 things about Delta I think have been awesome through this process.
1. Delta really did use this as a last ditch effort. The did all they could to stay out of bankruptcy, but in the end, could not avoid it. The action of the employees, and especially the pilots, shows how much heart this airline truly has.
2. Delta's new wave of changes has impressed me, as well as the whole industry. No one really saw Delta up and coming like this, lest it me Delta themselves. They have strengthened there JFK hub and are now the biggest International flyer out of this hub. They have routed all their cost effective 763's to the International market (for the most part), therefore cutting down on cost and thus rates. They are always growing in Salt Lake City, which is most likely soon to have direct service to Paris. They are talking about entering the Asia market in a big way, apart from codeshare, by building a major complex at KLAX. Lastly, they have really stretched the 777 for longer routes.
What we see now is a lean, mean, Delta Machine which is once again seen as a Legacy with lasting power. The expanding of International service has been a huge risk. No company, or individual, ever got anywhere by not risking.
Now Delta is talking about more routes, and surprisingly, new airplanes. Can you say 777-200LR and 787?

Actually, it's better than that Chris... but I wouldn't go buying it up just yet. wink Because of DAL's trading as a "pink sheet" stock (and no longer listed on the NYSE), you can find their stock price here:

The SPIRIT of Delta is what brought me to this VA. I use to work with Delta and they are some of the best people I have ever worked with, Including my team in Iraq. The only reason I had to leave was money. There is just some thing about the spirit of the company that makes me feel that it will not fold. When I left they were well on the way to making it into the green. I'm proud to now be apart of this comunity and hold on to that spirit!!

As Chris said above "bankrupt" in the corprate world is totally different from what we now as "bankrupt". They will restructure just as American, United, and US Airways did. One thing alot of people don't realize is that the Federal govt won't let them go out of business like Eastern did back in the early 90's. Our economy is roaring right now and losing one of the WORLD's largest employers would not only do some serious damage to our economy but the world's. My dad is a pilot for Delta and from the info I have gathered from him it just looks like they may form a new "SKY TEAM" probablly be called something wlse but it will be the same concept. This time they will partner with another major carrier such as US Airways instead of "second stringers" like the last group was. There has even been talk about British Airways partnering up with Delta.
