Hello Delta,

Since this is the channel we seem to use for making our announcements, I would like to make one of my own.

I would like to apologize to Gaston Doval, and hope he would accept my apology. Several weeks ago Gaston and I got into a serious debate over the merits of his MD-11 CheckRide. The core issue in the debate was this: does a 1/2SM visibility, by itself, dictate a CAT II landing? After exhaustive research into this issue, the answer is NO. CAT I minimums are a) RVR not less than 2400 feet and b) a DH of not lower than 200 feet. And since a statute mile is 5280 feet, half of that equals 2640 feet (which is more than 2400). It is a bit confusing, but Gaston is right... and I was wrong. Thank you Gaston for teaching me one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn in aviation. Everytime I see a visibility of 1/2SM, I'll think of you and how you stuck by your guns to teach me.

Thanks again,
Gary Fournerat
