I was browsing the midweek ops (tomorrow) from Minneapolis to Lincoln and wondering why, on a 288NM route, is the route planned on Victor airways (17,000 and below)? The suggested FL is 300. We should be using Jet aiways (at least FL180 or above).

because that is what vatsim uses on the simroutes website. I use flightaware and the route ORSKY2 OVR. So the choice is yours. My bet is that route is for VFR aircraft like the EMB120.

Many commercial flights use Victor flyways in their planning for those destinations that are off a Jet airway and do not have published approaches or departures. One that I am familiar with is the route Comair flies to/from ATL to MDT (my childhood home). Flightaware currently reporting:

SUMMT3 VXV J91 TONIO J42 BKW ESL V377 HAR

HAR V265 BINNS EMI J48 ODF FLCON1

I believe and someone please confirm this, that you need to be at or below 18,000' when flying a Victor. The track log of the RW flight would support this.

Terry, you are correct in that you can file Victor airways whenever you plan to be below FL180. All airways are planned (generally) to avoid Special Use Airspace (SUA). That's why we file airways in most cases. If you fly direct between navaids, you must ensure that you will not fly through Prohibited, active Restricted airspace, or active Military Operations Areas (MOAs). ATC will not clear you IFR through these when they are "hot." Victor airways are generally not nearly as direct since most SUA restrictions in the contiguous US are below FL180. It should be noted that Victor airways are never valid at FL180 or higher. You can still fly the "airway" but it would be filed as "direct" between Victor airway naviads.

I use Flight Aware to get routes,

And use the relitivly new feature of Generate Route, so now I can get FS9 flight files for Activesky.

I wanted to ask what the time of the event is. It says 20:00 on the calender but when you click to sign up it says the event is at 19:00.
