I know and understand that running a large operation like this with all the technology tied into it is certainly not free, although we get to enjoy it for free. I read in the NOTAM's about the buying shares thing but it seems outdated as it was for 2006. How do I go about making a donation for the continued sucess of our great organization?

Andrew, you are correct that there are costs associated with providing services. We are fortunate that the professionally created software and site maintenance is provided by volunteers, mainly Luke Kolin. Site hosting employs a dedicated server in a industrial strength facility. Our out of pocket is $119 per month. Members voluntarily provide financial support using a share system.

Friday was the close of our fiscal year. We will be reporting to current shareholders the outcome. They will have first priority to purchase shares. Shortly we will open up share purchase to the membership at large.

Thank you for your interest in making a donation.

just wondering, but does the share system work in anyways like real life, where the shareholder benefits in some way? I know obviously we wont get any money back, but do we get anything in return? Anything in the longrun?

Someone needs to make a flight PASSENGER simulator.......lol

Chris, in return you have this wonderful virtual airline. The shares, are to offset any operating costs that we incur.

I emailed the email in the NOTAM's section to donate a share months ago but never got a reply back. I would love to make a donation as well. It's little to ask a few members for ten dollars for hours woth of total enjoyment from the greatest VA out there.

We only solicit donations once a year, and then only after the existing shareholders exercise their option to contribute again at the same level. It's unfortunate you didn't get a response, but not surprising. I'm not sure if we're going to be taking on new shareholders for next year - Terry sent me a draft FY08 budget and it looks like our accumulated surplus is approximately 50% of our budget and we intend to draw it down so fewer shares will need to be raised.

I'd like to emphasize how grateful I am for everyone's contributions over the past few years. After having funded DVA 100% for several years, it has been wonderful to have people contribute and this has allowed us to get a MUCH better server than I could provide. Our current levels of over-subscription means that finances are not a worry; anything we reasonably need we can afford. I can tell you first-hand that Terry has been a frugal and sensible guardian of the purse; there are a number of technical ideas we have had in the area of redundancy and disaster recovery that would have been expensive that we didn't go for. We don't spend a lot, but what we do provides some great value.

At the same time, in FY08 we have budgeted for some interesting improvements like a quarterly subscription to NOAA approach charts, and we have purchased some additional domains for potential future expansion. If we remain oversubscribed in terms of share purchases for FY08, then in FY09 we may consider reducing the share price and further limiting the maximum number an individual may subscribe to, in order to broaden the shareholder base. My personal goal has been to have as many people as possible contribute, rather than getting large donations from a small number of people.

Cheers!

the airline is great and all, and getting it in return is great as well because......its all we got pretty much lol.

But anyways, a good idea that might help pennypinchers donate would be they would recieve some sort of little recognation or something, like a special sig that had some sort of little thing like "I GAVE", something like that. Or a title on their profile, you know.
People always like getting something smile
