The main DVA server has been fixed and is back online (hence no more stripes in the Water Cooler). Hopefully the power supply will be a little less flaky this time (although to be fair the old one had been running for almost 5 years 24x7x365).

I have also decided to bite the bullet and overclock the CPU; the motherboard supports only 400Mhz or 533Mhz operation, and it's a 466Mhz CPU. I have been underclocking it for years, but since Digital always overengineered everything I'm trying a 66Mhz overclock to see what happens. It is a 33% boost in speed for the CPU, so I'll be happy if it works. If the site goes down again tonight, I guess not. smile

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately this 21064 motherboard does not have environmental monitoring. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

If it dies I'll finally have to bite the bullet and get an x86 board for the web site - there's a P2B-D plus 2xP3-550 combo for $50 on ebay right now; that'd be a good upgrade. I like dualies! (But I love my Alpha more).

Cheers!

The stripes are the result of v6 of the server software we are running. The main server is a DEC Alpha 21064 RISC chip, running NT4 and 5.0.10 of the server software. The backup server is running win2k on a 300 Mhz PII (my own box until I discovered flightsim and its CPU-hogging talents) and is actually more advanced server software, but there is no RISC version.

I want to upgrade the server software, but that will involve a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade that I am unsure if it can be pulled off right now.

Cheers!
