ACARS is a great tool to aid and assist pilots who are new to an equipment type. Self-analysis after the flight can help First Officers better prepare themselves for future flights in areas such as fuel planning, flight planning, navigation, etc. For some time B727, DC-8 and MD-11 First Officers on a trial basis were required to complete the 10 flight legs using ACARS submitted reports. While the programs are small, overall there were no issues raised by the participants or program Chief Pilots. It was decided that it was time to conduct a trial in a mainstream program.

On October 10th, 2007, we conducted a 30-day trial in the B757 program and it was successful. We have decided to continue the B757 test another 30 days and expand it to all remaining Stage 3 and Stage 4 aircraft.

The new trial will begin on November 11th. First officers on their journey to accumulating 10 flight legs will be grandfathered. Flights up to Nov. 11th in programs that haven't yet required ACARS usage for promotion will be counted as ACARS submitted flights. Any Stage 3 or Stage 4 First Officers experiencing difficulty using ACARS should create a help desk issue describing the problem in detail so we can help get it resolved.

Stage 3 aircraft - B727, B757, B767 programs
Stage 4 aircraft - B777, DC-6, DC-8, L1011, MD-11

There are no plans to expand this test into Stage 1 or Stage 2 aircraft at this time.
